1953, September: "The Big Bell in Nara, Japan - It is a religious symbol. When struck by the timber it can be heard for a distance of about 4 miles and the tone can last for over two minutes. It weights over 46 tons and is made of bronze. The building is constructed of interlocking beams. Nails were not necessary in this building." (Todai-ji Bell)
