Japan

From July 1953 through February 1954, the 3rd Marine Division was in Japan as strategic reserve for Korea. LtCol (then Major) Rufus B. Thompson, Jr., USMC served as Regimental S-2 Officer (Intelligence), the regimental liaison to the local Prefectural Counsel. The Marines were billeted in old Japanese army compounds around Nara, Japan. He transferred to Korea in February 1954 to join the 1st Marine Division.
